5 Open Source Talks to Look Forward to at EclipseCon 2021

The freedom of open source software to use, study, modify, distribute and redistribute code is becoming indispensable for companies, organizations and the society. There is no better place to learn about the latest open source technologies than EclipseCon 2021.

 

While this event covers runtimes, tools, and frameworks for cloud and edge applications, IoT, artificial intelligence, connected vehicles and transportation and digital ledger technologies, we also have a track called The Open Source Way.This track focuses on open source usage, contributions and leadership, tools and best practices for managing OSS in organizations, open source business models, governance models for companies, the value of open source foundations, risks and rewards in doing open source and more. Open-Source in Safety-Critical Systems? How does that work?

Speaker: Simon Hoinkis (Apex.AI, Inc)

The talk will give an overview over the typical automotive software development process and discuss the modifications in the development workflow that were created for Eclipse iceoryx. It will address hands-on questions like: What does the safety context mean for maintainers and contributors? How can one use Eclipse iceoryx in a safety-critical systems? What are the advantages over a closed-source solution? Learn more.

 

A Hitchhiker's Guide how to create an Open-Source Business

Speaker: Philip Wenig (Lablicate GmbH)

This talk will uncover the advantages and opportunities of starting a business, especially an Open-Source business. Open-Source needs to be maintained. The more people make a living of it, the better chance we have that Open-Source is maintained in the long term. Learn more.

 

Open source in RegTech, solving a billion dollar problem

Speaker: Neil Mackenzie (Bird Software Solutions Ltd)

This talk will discuss the European Central Bank’s collaborative BIRD project for open standards in regulation, The Eclipse Free BIRD tools project providing open source tools built on top of BIRD, and the open source Fire regulatory data model used by banks looking to gain the benefits of open source collaboration. Evolving Intellectual Property Standards and Practices in Open Source

Speaker: Wayne Beaton (Eclipse Foundation)

This talk will provide a survey of the various standards and tools (SPDX, REUSE, OpenChain, ClearlyDefined, CHAOSS, ORT, ...) that are evolving in the open source community, and talk about moves that the Eclipse Foundation is planning to leverage them to automate and completely modernize our intellectual property due diligence practices. From a Swabian car manufacturer to an open source enthusiast

Speakers: Martin Haselbach (Daimler TSS GmbH) and Basem Vaseghi (Daimler TSS GmbH)

This talk will highlight automotive and other industries to embrace the Open Source strategy to better meet customer needs while remaining cost- and staff-effective. In particular, it will give insights into the transition from a “make or buy” strategy into an “open source, make, or buy” strategy. Learn more.
