We’re feeling excited about another year of community, code and collaboration at EclipseCon 2023. This years event features talks in six categories: Tools & IDEs, IoT & Edge, Programming Languages & Runtimes, Automotive & Mobility, Open Source Best Practices and Other Cool Stuff.
While the call for proposals is open until June 16, the program committee has selected five talks for early acceptance:
A Dev perspective on Java Loom

One of the main drawback of Java backend applications is that they spend most of their time waiting: for the disk, the network, the database… And with the classical thread-per-request model, we end up with lot of threads just doing … nothing! This situation is no longer acceptable with native cloud applications and modern hardware.
This is precisely what Project Loom want to tackle with 3 new features: Virtual Threads, Structured Concurrency and Scoped Variables. Virtual Threads have been around for a while and will become a stable feature with Java 21, the next LTS version planned in September 2023. So it's coming very soon!

Pros and cons of using Kubernetes as a development platform

This is the story of the lessons learned working on Eclipse Che to provision development environments on Kubernetes.
In this talk we are going to review the challenges that we faced at the very beginning of our journey (permissions, storage and networking), the architectural changes to make development environments first class citizens in Kubernetes (the DevWorkspace operator) and the new challenges to leverage ephemeral containers and vertical autoscalers.
Leveraging Eclipse SUMO and Eclipse MOSAIC: Unleashing the Power of Digital Twins for Efficient Urban Mobility Management in Berlin

This presentation provides practical guidance on leveraging Eclipse SUMO and Eclipse MOSAIC to work with our publicly available Berlin SUMO Traffic Scenario (https://github.com/mosaic-addons/best-scenario) comprising of 2,25 million trips within an area of 800 km². We hope to empower stakeholders to drive positive change in metropolitan areas. By collaborating and utilizing these tools, local authorities, city planners, and automotive and logistics providers can work towards more efficient, sustainable, and livable cities like Berlin.
Trucks on a Leash - Fleet Management the Open Source Way

In this talk I will present the Truck Fleet Management blueprint which is focused on capitalizing on all the data that a fleet of trucks generates. Fleet managers want to be able to capture and make use of where vehicles are, how fast they’re going, and other details. This problem domain is already addressed by commercial vendors offering Fleet Management System (FMS) software-as-a-service , mostly using vendor and vehicle specific telematics units (black boxes) which need to be installed to the vehicle to extract data and transmit to a cloud back end. Clients of such solutions often complain about hardware and software vendor lock-in, which results in high costs for adding vehicles of additional brands and/or migrating to a different FMS vendor.
