The Top 5 IoT Sessions from EclipseCon 2020

Monday, January 11, 2021 - 08:34 by Hudson Kelly

EclipseCon 2020, which was virtual for the first time, boasted eleven IoT and Edge related sessions with topics ranging from innovative operating systems to autonomous driving to how Edge Computing can learn from the moon landings and everything in between. Racking up nearly 4,000 views combined, the IoT track and its variety of topics have proven very intriguing to the Eclipse community. This reinforces a point of which the IoT community is already well aware: IoT relevance and adoption continues to be an emerging trend among companies using open source technologies. Here are the  five most popular IoT sessions from EclipseCon 2020, based on views:

#5: Building an Industrial IoT Solution - Open Source - Julian Feinauer (Pragmatic Industries GmbH) Kevin Olotu (Robert Bosch GmbH)

Julian Feinauer (pragmatic industries GmbH) and Kevin Olotu (Robert Bosch GmbH) show you how to build an industrial IoT Solution, with Gateway/Client and Backend fully based on open source technology. The session walks through the process of building a solution that can describe the machine, data and capabilities using Eclipse Vorto, reads data from a PLC controller, and sends the data to a cloud backend to make it accessible to other services.

#4: High Speed Autonomous Driving with Autoware ROS 2 CycloneDDS #iac2021 #becauseracecar - Joe Speed (ADLINK Technology) Tom Panzarella (Box Robotics, Inc.)

Joe Speed (ADLINK Technology) and Tom Panzarella (Box Robotics, Inc.) explain how the open source community is uniting to provide an autonomous driving stack to support universities exploring high speed autonomous driving cars in competitions such as F1TENTH and Indy Autonomous Challenge. See how projects like Eclipse CycloneDDS, OpenCV, and Eclipse OpenADx are overcoming technical challenges in the autonomous driving field.

#3: HarmonyOS: Key technical features and architectural deep dive - Suhail Khan (Huawei)

Discussing the exciting HarmonyOS by Huawei,  Suhail Khan (Huawei) takes a deep dive into how this revolutionary operating system is designed, from modular architecture and build system, to deployment to devices and more.

#2: Developing and Debugging ESP32 IoT Applications using Espressif Eclipse Plugin - Kondal Kolipaka & Ivan Grokhotkov (Espressif Systems)

In this session presented by Ivan Grokhotkov and Kondal Kolipaka of Espressif Systems, see how the ESP-IDF Plugin improves, simplifies and enhances standard Eclipse CDT with improved tooling capabilities on ESP32.  A popular low-power system on chip microcontrollers with integrated Wi-Fi and dual-mode Bluetooth, ESP32 is commonly used in designing and prototyping IoT solutions.

#1: Introducing Open Harmony OS - Davide Ricci & Adrian O'Sullivan (Huawei)

In another session on Harmony OS, this time from Davide Ricci and Adrian O’Sullivan, familiarize yourself with the current trends in the consumer electronics market along with some of the problems caused by fragmentation due to dominant vendor-led initiatives. Then, witness the solution to the problem introduced by the possibility of a unified operating system. Get to know Open Harmony OS by Huawei and its aim to deliver a unique user experience across devices and scenarios, changing the consumer electronics and mobile phone experience forever.
