It can’t possibly work

Tuesday, October 18, 2005 - 23:20 by Wayne Beaton

I attended a talk on Monday morning hosted by the Ottawa SPIN (Software Process Improvement Network) forum titled “The Cost, Quality, and Security of Open Source Software: Fact and Fiction”. The presenter, Khaled El Emam, who among his many varied titles is an associate professor at the University of Ottawa, has done a study of open source software. In his study, he made very few distinctions between types of software.

Life goal #129

Friday, October 14, 2005 - 13:38 by Wayne Beaton

I maintain an informal collection of life goals. Many of them have something to do with glass elevators, but I’ll save those for another day. Let me introduce life goal #129: to have a bug raised against me; not against code that I’ve written, but against my actual person. I direct your attention to bugzilla bug 112631.

Jörg von Frantzius has contributed a solution that I will work with community committers to have instated.

Keeping track of bugzilla

Thursday, October 13, 2005 - 11:36 by Wayne Beaton

Here’s something that’s pretty cool…

If you want to keep up with what a team’s doing, you can listen in on their bug reports (and responses to the reports). Effectively, you can listen in to the emails that result from bug reports being created and responded to.

I always thought that JUnit was good enough

Tuesday, October 4, 2005 - 11:54 by Wayne Beaton

And yet, they seem to be able to keep coming out with ways to improve it. Take a look at “An early look at JUnit 4” byElliotte Harold on developerWorks site for some highlights of what to expect. As of the writing of the article, the new version isn’t available for download in binary form yet, but you can get the code from the CVS repository.

Fun with Combinatorics

Monday, October 3, 2005 - 10:10 by Wayne Beaton

I attended a talk a few days ago in which the speaker was talking about some of the challenges faced by organizations building plug-ins. He stated something to the effect of “if you have six separately deployable (i.e. not interdependent) plug-ins, then there are ‘six factorial‘ (6 x 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 = 720) different ways to deploy them”. The statement bothered me, primarily because I’m a huge nerd and mathematical genius wannabe.

eBay SDK for Java and RCP

Wednesday, September 28, 2005 - 10:14 by Wayne Beaton

I’ve been looking into the use of eBay from an Eclipse RCP. The good news is that it works; at least, I’ve had some success. eBay provides a site for developers where you can get a software developer’s kit (SDK) that includes almost everything you need (more complete examples would be nice) including documentation, examples, and Java libraries. The libraries are Apache Axis-generated web services code (generated from a provided WSDL file).

WebTools 1.0 will support web services client generation into a plug-in

Monday, September 26, 2005 - 13:40 by Wayne Beaton

On September 15th/2005, I wrote about the WebTools Project (WTP) and some issues that I encountered while trying to create a client for a web service in a plug-in. It turns out that this support is in-plan for version 1.0.

In a response to bug #109625, Chris Brealey wrote:

PHPEclipse and XAMPP

Sunday, September 25, 2005 - 16:05 by Wayne Beaton

At the Eclipse Foundation, we tend to eat our own dog food. Foundation employees use Eclipse itself to generate content for the website (I can’t speak for individual project teams, but I’m pretty sure that most of them do as well). In particular, we use PHPEclipse to create and edit most of the content (which makes pretty heavy use of PHP).

Draggin’ and droppin’ URLs

Friday, September 23, 2005 - 13:48 by Wayne Beaton

Yesterday, I wrote about the ability to drop URLs onto an SWT component. I’ll pause for a couple of minutes while you go back and review it…

Integrating Firefox with RCP

Thursday, September 22, 2005 - 23:25 by Wayne Beaton

I was asked a question today about whether or not Eclipse RCP can integrate with Firefox. The short answer is “yes”. The longer answer is “what do you mean by ‘integrate’?”.
