TL;DR - We’re thrilled to announce Open Community Experience 2024, a new conference for our vibrant community of communities.
2023 has been a year of continued growth for Eclipse Foundation communities. New and existing industry collaborations including Software Defined Vehicle, Eclipse ThreadX, Adoptium, Eclipse IDE, and Jakarta EE advance and support technologies adopted by thousands of companies and used by millions of software developers worldwide. At this year’s EclipseCon, we received a lot of great feedback on the content, structure, and length of the conference, and the success of the community days. In 2024, we plan to build on this community engagement by launching the Open Community Experience (OCX) conference, a new umbrella event developed with our evolving communities’ and sponsors’ needs in mind.
OCX will take place from October 22 to 24, 2024 at Halle 45 (https://www.halle45.de/) in the vibrant and historic city of Mainz, Germany, near Frankfurt. The conference will feature multiple tracks of sessions across Eclipse projects and topics of interest to open source developers and practitioners, including embedded IoT and edge, languages and runtimes, open source supply chain security, trusted data sharing and dataspaces, and open source best practices.
To emphasise our communities, we will also organise multi-day collocated events focused on the core pillars of the larger Eclipse ecosystem. In addition to the main OCX Call for Proposals (CFP) and Program Committee (PC), each collocated event will have a CFP and PC to ensure high-quality content, speakers, and activities. At this time, the planned lineup will include:
- EclipseCon, revamped as the centre of gravity for all topics related to the Eclipse IDE platform and next generation development tools;
- Open Community for Java focusing on topics related to Jakarta EE, Adoptium, MicroProfile, open source enterprise Java, and more; and
- Open Community for Automotive dedicated to automotive software, software defined vehicles, and mobility topics.
Events have been an integral part of our community development since the Eclipse Foundation's inception in 2004. With this change we are leveraging the past to embrace our evolution and shape the future. By bringing our diverse community of communities together at a “conference of conferences,” we intend to provide a welcoming event for networking, learning about cutting-edge open technologies, and cross-pollination among our increasingly diverse Eclipse projects and industry collaborations.
Stay tuned for more details as plans take shape. We will provide updates as we work with our community members to develop the programs for OCX and for the respective collocated events. Check the event website to stay up-to-date on announcements, including CFPs and save the date in your calendars!
