Oniro Global Ecosystem Forum: Building the Bridge to European Markets

On October 3, 2026, the Oniro Global Ecosystem Conference brought together software engineers, hardware vendors, open source maintainers, enterprise leaders, and university professors in the city of Prague. The forum provided a practical venue to review how open source collaboration moves from architecture concepts to working code, compliant hardware, and commercial products.

The forum began with an opening speech by Mr. Xiao Ran, Vice President of Huawei Technologies. He emphasised the practical value of international open source cooperation, noting that open software platforms build long-term stability when global communities share engineering effort, standards, and code across borders, and in particular  the future of Oniro in the AI era.

Technical Highlights

The track featured seven technical presentations covering platform governance, hardware porting, web engines, application runtimes, and user interface frameworks.

Building upon OpenHarmony: The Role of the Eclipse Foundation in the Oniro Ecosystem

Ignacio Ahedo (Oniro Program Manager, Eclipse Foundation)

Opening the speaker series, Ignacio introduced Oniro as an open source, vendor-neutral operating system platform built for smart devices and global markets, building upon OpenHarmony. He explained how this vendor-neutral governance under the Eclipse Foundation de-risks adoption for European companies and research institutions, addressing emerging European Union regulatory requirements—such as the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA)—through structured legal frameworks, transparent IP management, and open source compliance toolchains.

Bringing Oniro to a European developer phone: how OpenHarmony reaches new hardware

Francesco Pham (Eclipse Oniro PMC Lead, Huawei Kopernik Research Center)

Francesco demonstrated Oniro running natively on a commercial European developer phone: the Volla Phone Plinius. He explained the thin hardware abstraction layer implemented beneath OpenHarmony, which allows existing vendor chipset drivers to be used directly without modifying core OpenHarmony APIs. He reviewed current functional capabilities on the phone, evaluated engineering trade-offs, and outlined how this porting method simplifies hardware enablement for future devices.

YanLinkOS – From Oniro's First Commercial Distribution to Production-Grade Deployment in Europe

Sun Yan (Co-Founder and Head of Europe & Finance, YanLink)

Addressing the step from open source platform code to commercial product, Sun Yan presented YanLinkOS. He explained how YanLink adapts Oniro's platform architecture into production-grade deployments tailored for European industrial IoT, edge AI, and smart device integrators.

European Hardware and Unified Attestation for a European Ecosystem

Dr. Jörg Wurzer (Founder and Managing Director, Volla Systeme GmbH) & Robin Haug (Head of International Sales, Volla Systeme GmbH)

Unfortunately, Dr. Jörg Wurzer was unable to join in person in Prague, so he provided a pre-recorded video presentation focusing on running Oniro on privacy-focused Volla smartphones. He introduced Unified Attestation, an open source security framework designed to provide verifiable device integrity without relying on proprietary vendor lock-in. Following the video presentation, Robin Haug took the mic live to answer questions from the audience regarding Volla's device roadmap and hardware availability.

WebKit for OpenHarmony and Oniro

Jani Hautakangas (Senior Software Engineer and Founder, KodeGood)

Jani delivered a technical engineering report on porting an independent WebKit-based WebView engine to OpenHarmony and Oniro. He walked through the stack implementation—including dependency build setups, IPC pipelines, GPU buffer sharing, and main-loop integration—before showing a demo running on the Volla X23 phone.

TBD: The Best Device (Lightweight Cross-Platform Applications with Tauri)

Daniel Thompson-Yvetot (CEO, CrabNebula Ltd.)

Daniel demonstrated how the Tauri framework integrates into the Oniro and OpenHarmony ecosystem. By pairing a Rust core with native webview backends, Tauri allows developers to build small, fast, and secure cross-platform applications. To show how accessible the toolkit is, Daniel built a custom application live on stage and deployed it directly to his smartwatch, demonstrating fluid execution on resource-constrained hardware.

OpenHarmony Flutter Embedder: a 12-month technical roadmap

Davide Ricci (Vice President and General Manager, Linaro)

Closing the technical talks, Davide outlined a 12-month engineering roadmap for advancing native Flutter support within OpenHarmony. He focused on an upstream-first strategy, showing how cross-industry engineering collaboration on UI embedders gives developers familiar tools while keeping the underlying codebase maintainable over time.

Final Remarks and Future Collaboration

The forum concluded with final remarks from Adrian O'Sullivan (Director of the European Open Source Program Office, Huawei) alongside Ignacio Ahedo. Adrian summarised the strategic value of combining open source governance, European regulatory readiness, and flexible software runtimes to support commercial adopters and academic researchers.

Directly following the session, speakers and attendees joined an evening cocktail dinner. The setting gave everyone an opportunity to turn the technical sessions into concrete next steps, starting several direct conversations with potential enterprise partners, research groups, and university professors interested in establishing joint projects on Oniro.

By serving as the bridge to European markets for OpenHarmony, Oniro continues to build a stable, legally sound, and developer-friendly home for open smart devices.
