How MacStadium’s sponsorship strengthens Adoptium

Monday, November 10, 2025 - 10:16 by Carmen Delgado

At the Eclipse Foundation, we’re fortunate to collaborate with organisations that share our commitment to advancing open source software. One such partner is MacStadium, whose in-kind sponsorship plays a critical role in the ongoing success of the Adoptium Working Group.

Enabling reliable Java runtimes through infrastructure support

MacStadium included Adoptium in their Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) programme by becoming an in-kind sponsor, recognising the value of Adoptium’s mission to deliver high-quality, standards-compliant OpenJDK binaries across all major platforms, including macOS.

As part of their contribution, MacStadium is providing:

  • Eight Apple silicon Mac Mini systems (M1, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD, 10-core GPU)

  • Eight licences for their Orka virtualisation platform, enabling Kubernetes-native CI/CD workflows on Apple hardware

This dedicated infrastructure has become a core part of Adoptium’s CI pipeline, ensuring stable, native macOS ARM64 builds that developers can rely on. The performance benefits are substantial: faster build times, consistent test environments, and reduced overhead from debugging and maintenance.

A shared commitment to the open source ecosystem

MacStadium’s support reflects their broader mission to give back to the open source community. By providing infrastructure and licences to strategic projects like Eclipse Temurin, they’re investing in the developer tools and platforms that power modern enterprise software.

The partnership also helps MacStadium demonstrate the capabilities of their Orka platform, a macOS virtualisation and orchestration solution tailored for automation, scalability, and performance. Their technology allows Adoptium contributors to test, build, and release with confidence on real Apple hardware without the limitations of virtualisation or shared resources.

Empowering collaboration and innovation

Open source projects such as Temurin provide essential building blocks for software development across industries. Java remains one of the world’s most widely adopted programming languages, and Adoptium ensures continued access to trusted Java runtimes for organisations of all sizes.

MacStadium’s sponsorship directly supports this mission by reducing the project’s infrastructure costs and operational complexity. The result is a more efficient, resilient pipeline that allows contributors to focus on innovation and quality.

Looking ahead: strengthening the Mac developer ecosystem

MacStadium’s involvement with Adoptium is part of a larger effort to support open source development on Apple platforms. Through their FOSS programme, they currently sponsor more than 100 open source projects by providing access to genuine Apple hardware for development and testing across macOS, iOS, tvOS, and watchOS.

Their ongoing commitment to the community is helping to shape a stronger, more open Apple developer ecosystem, and we are grateful for their continued support.
