From consumer to champion: How Bloomberg is strengthening the open source Java community

Monday, October 6, 2025 - 07:11 by Carmen Delgado

As the Adoptium Program Manager, I’m thrilled to shine a spotlight on Bloomberg’s journey with us. Their story is a powerful example of what makes our community so special and a clear blueprint for other enterprises using open source Java.

Bloomberg, a global leader in financial services, relies on a vast and complex infrastructure powered by open source technologies. For years, their engineering teams have depended on a high-quality Java runtime. Back in 2018, their Java & JVM Guild, in collaboration with their Open Source Program Office, made a strategic decision to transition to a free, open source JDK. They chose AdoptOpenJDK, now known as Eclipse Temurin.

The partnership quickly proved to be a win-win. Bloomberg found it incredibly easy to integrate our builds, and they were impressed by our regular security patches and wide-ranging platform support. After benefiting from our project's reliability for several years, Bloomberg decided it was time to make a direct contribution. In December 2022, they officially joined the Adoptium Working Group as an Enterprise Member.

Bloomberg’s membership is a testament to the value of our project and the importance of giving back to the open source community. For us, having a heavy enterprise user like Bloomberg, whose core business depends on the stability of our work, is incredibly valuable. Their membership not only provides critical funding but also brings their extensive real-world experience to the table, helping us ensure our project remains robust and aligned with the needs of the largest enterprise users.

Bloomberg’s journey with Eclipse Temurin is a clear signal to the industry: thriving open source doesn’t just happen, it’s built and sustained by the companies that depend on it. Forward-looking organisations know that investing in the communities behind critical Java runtimes like Temurin isn’t optional; it’s essential for long-term stability and innovation. By becoming an Adoptium Working Group member, you help shape the project’s future, strengthen its security and testing backbone, and ensure the Java ecosystem remains open, robust, and enterprise-ready.

Inspired by Bloomberg? Join the Adoptium Working Group and help us continue to build a strong, secure, and vendor-neutral Java ecosystem for everyone.
