Open Source Is a Key Enabler for Sustainable Development

Tuesday, April 9, 2024 - 09:26 by Thabang Mashologu

Within the Eclipse Foundation’s community, we believe in technology as a force for good. Eclipse open source projects are used by millions of developers worldwide, and are supported by more than 2,000 dedicated committers in over 50 countries. The technologies under our stewardship are accessible to all and adaptable across diverse global contexts.

Our approach to software development and community building is in line with the fundamental values of the open source software (OSS) model  — namely, openness, inclusivity, transparency, and trust. These values drive technological empowerment and innovation worldwide, aligning with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs comprise 17 goals adopted by all UN member states, encompassing peace, security, economic development, gender equality, and human well-being.

Today's global software infrastructure is composed of over 80% open source components. As such, the open source community plays a crucial role as a driving force behind the technologies that power the modern world. The OSS model's ability to empower and engage developers, and to democratize innovation, is essential for promoting equitable participation, achieving gender balance, and supporting sustainable development. These contributions position open source as a key element in the collective effort to attain the SDGs.

Achieving the SDGs requires multi-sectoral collaboration among governments, companies, academic and research institutions, open source organisations, and individuals. The Eclipse Foundation provides a robust and secure environment for a global community of passionate individuals and organisations to collaborate and develop innovative software that can be applied to achievement of the SDGs.

The foundation is also proud to be a founding member and active contributor to the OSPO Alliance, an open community that brings and shares guidance to organisations willing to professionally manage the usage, contribution to, and publication of open source software. OSPOs (Open Source Program Offices) have the potential to enable new forms of global collaboration around open source for good, and we’re excited to be a part of this conversation.

Our global community excels in developing sustainable open technologies for practical problem-solving. We invite our community of developers to contribute their skills to achieving the SDGs. Whether it's leveraging existing projects for specific applications, contributing new code, creating documentation, or mentoring newcomers, every contribution counts.

Join us in supporting the OSPOs for Good initiative to contribute to a sustainable future and a more equitable world through open source.
