Sparkplug is an open source specification defining a protocol to improve the interoperability and scalability of IIoT solutions. In Orlando today at the ARC Advisory Group’s 24th Annual Industry Forum, the Eclipse Foundation announced the formation of the Sparkplug Working Group.
The objective of the working group is to drive the evolution and broad adoption of the Eclipse Sparkplug Specification that enables the creation of open, interoperable, Industrial IoT (IIoT) solutions utilizing MQTT. Founding members include Chevron, Canary Labs, Cirrus Link Solutions, HiveMQ, Inductive Automation, and ORing.
Sparking is a widely used open source software specification that provides MQTT clients the framework to seamlessly integrate data from their applications, sensors, devices, and gateways within the MQTT Infrastructure. Sparkplug addresses the requirements within an MQTT infrastructure to defines: a topic namespace, a payload definition optimized for industrial process variables and MQTT session state management required by real-time OT SCADA systems.
