Run Eclipse IDE on One Version of Java, but Target Another

The Eclipse IDE for Java Developers (and the other Java developer variants) is itself a Java application that’s used to build Java applications. That relationship can be a bit weird to wrap your brain around.

I’d taken a little break from testing Eclipse Platform on Java 9 Jigsaw builds. A few nights ago, I pulled down the latest builds of both and gave them a spin.

I’ve recently been playing with the early-access version of Zulu Embedded for ARM32. Zulu is an open-source and certified build of OpenJDK. It is a great alternative to the JRE from Oracle as it does not requires you to pay any licenses, and it is also a huge improvement over the OpenJDK build you can get off the Debian repositories, which is not really optimized for ARM (and that’s a euphemism! :smile:).

As I stated in an earlier post, I’ve been running Eclipse Neon on the Java 9 + Jigsaw builds for a little while and haven’t had any issues. I spent a few hours over the weekend tinkering with some modularity tool ideas. I wrote a little plug-in for Eclipse Neon that visualizes the connections between the various modules.
