Observations On Marketing Open Source Projects

On a number of occasions I have been asked for advice on how to ‘market’ an Eclipse open source project. I know there is no one secret formula but I do think there are some best practices. Here is what I often tell people.

Eclipse Support for OSGi R4

Monday, October 10, 2005 - 09:36

Tomorrow we will be issuing a press release to announce support for the OSGi R4 specification. To some people this may seem like old news, but in some ways I think the Eclipse use of the OSGi specification as the component model is a misunderstood feature of Eclipse.

New Examples of RCP Based Applications

Friday, October 7, 2005 - 09:58

Back near the end of May, I posted a series of screenshots showing different RCP applications. Macromedia announces Eclipse based Flex IDE

Thursday, October 6, 2005 - 05:06

A couple of very cool announcements coming out today. First, Macromedia has announced their Eclipse based Flex IDE. Looks like an alpha version will be available later this month. I think it is pretty cool that Macromedia is building their next generation IDE on top of Eclipse. Certainly demonstrated the flexibility of the Eclipse platform for being a truly universal tools platform.

I always thought that JUnit was good enough

Tuesday, October 4, 2005 - 11:54 by Wayne Beaton

And yet, they seem to be able to keep coming out with ways to improve it. Take a look at “An early look at JUnit 4” byElliotte Harold on developerWorks site for some highlights of what to expect. As of the writing of the article, the new version isn’t available for download in binary form yet, but you can get the code from the CVS repository.

Fun with Combinatorics

Monday, October 3, 2005 - 10:10 by Wayne Beaton

I attended a talk a few days ago in which the speaker was talking about some of the challenges faced by organizations building plug-ins. He stated something to the effect of “if you have six separately deployable (i.e. not interdependent) plug-ins, then there are ‘six factorial‘ (6 x 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 = 720) different ways to deploy them”. The statement bothered me, primarily because I’m a huge nerd and mathematical genius wannabe.
