Life goal #493

Sunday, October 23, 2005 - 21:47 by Wayne Beaton

Earlier today, I sent a note off to an Eclipse contributor to ask a couple of questions about the status of a bug I submitted. My message somehow got flagged as obscene spam which is sort of cool all by itself (though not all that improbable). Anyway, he apparently made some comment about the obscene note from his friend Wayne to his two children who decided to name the ugly wizard puppet their mother recently bought them “Wayne the Wizard”.

So… life goal #493 is realized: to have an ugly wizard puppet named after me.

Whirlwind Tour

Wednesday, October 19, 2005 - 19:42 by Mike Milinkovich

So I am currently at the Hyatt Regency Burlingame — fondly remembered as the site of our most recent EclipseCon — for the Zend/PHP conference. This is my third conference in eight days. London, Paris and San Francisco in eight days. Remind me to never do that again.

But the great thing is that no matter where I go, Eclipse is present in a big way.

    It can’t possibly work

    Tuesday, October 18, 2005 - 23:20 by Wayne Beaton

I attended a talk on Monday morning hosted by the Ottawa SPIN (Software Process Improvement Network) forum titled “The Cost, Quality, and Security of Open Source Software: Fact and Fiction”. The presenter, Khaled El Emam, who among his many varied titles is an associate professor at the University of Ottawa, has done a study of open source software. In his study, he made very few distinctions between types of software.

We are starting to gear up for EclipseCon. To incent people to register early, you not only get a deal on the price but we will also be giving a copy of the new Eclipse RCP book to the first 200 passport registrants. For those that have already registered for a passport, don’t worry we will save a book for you.

    Life goal #129

    Friday, October 14, 2005 - 13:38 by Wayne Beaton

I maintain an informal collection of life goals. Many of them have something to do with glass elevators, but I’ll save those for another day. Let me introduce life goal #129: to have a bug raised against me; not against code that I’ve written, but against my actual person. I direct your attention to bugzilla bug 112631.

Jörg von Frantzius has contributed a solution that I will work with community committers to have instated.

    Keeping track of bugzilla

    Thursday, October 13, 2005 - 11:36 by Wayne Beaton

    Here’s something that’s pretty cool…

If you want to keep up with what a team’s doing, you can listen in on their bug reports (and responses to the reports). Effectively, you can listen in to the emails that result from bug reports being created and responded to.

Observations On Marketing Open Source Projects

On a number of occasions I have been asked for advice on how to ‘market’ an Eclipse open source project. I know there is no one secret formula but I do think there are some best practices. Here is what I often tell people.

    Eclipse Support for OSGi R4

    Monday, October 10, 2005 - 09:36 by Ian Skerrett

Tomorrow we will be issuing a press release to announce support for the OSGi R4 specification. To some people this may seem like old news, but in some ways I think the Eclipse use of the OSGi specification as the component model is a misunderstood feature of Eclipse.
