Upcoming Release Review: eRCP 1.3

Thursday, June 11, 2009 - 15:38 by Wayne Beaton

The intent of this project is to extend the Eclipse Rich Client Platform (RCP) to embedded devices. eRCP is largely a set of components which are subsets of RCP components. It basically enables the same application model used on desktop machines to be used on devices.

New features in this release include:

Galileo Release Reviews

Wednesday, June 10, 2009 - 13:37 by Wayne Beaton

Today we held the big review call for projects included in the Galileo release. One of the interesting things that came out in the call is that the number of project reviews appears at odds with the number of projects listed in the Projects section on the Galileo Simultaneous Release wiki page. It all depends on how you count things.

Developing Community

Friday, June 5, 2009 - 11:31 by Wayne Beaton

My JavaOne encounter has caused me to think a lot lately about developing community around open source projects. Here’s a good rule of thumb if you want to develop a community around you’re open source project: don’t call your potential future users “stupid”. Yes, I am making a mountain out of the proverbial molehill.

Automated IP Log Tool

Wednesday, May 27, 2009 - 22:44 by Wayne Beaton

There’s a fundamental problem with the Automated IP Log Tool. Now, don’t get me wrong… there’s a lot of good stuff in there. And we’re going to keep on leveragin’ that good stuff as we move forward. But there’s a fundamental problem.

Committer Community Brainstorming

Tuesday, May 26, 2009 - 13:31 by Wayne Beaton

I’ve been blogging recently about some project/committer issues that I’d like to address. I’ve created a wiki page that I intend to use as a home for incubating ideas about things that my crack staff and I can focus attention on to make things better for everybody. My plan is to use this page to brainstorm the ideas to the point where they can either be acted on, or moved into Bugzilla as viable, actionable, discuss-able tasks.

Get the Band Back Together

Friday, May 22, 2009 - 15:21 by Wayne Beaton

In my many years as a consultant (prior to my start here at the Eclipse Foundation), I worked with more organizations that I can reasonably count. My feeling is that I have provided a lot of value to the groups that I’ve worked with. Depressingly, though, I feel that some of my greatest successes as a consultant have very little to do with my fantastic abilities to manipulate technology to implement my will on the world. My greatest successes have had more to do with getting folks to actually communicate with each other.

ATF Termination Review Deferred

Wednesday, May 20, 2009 - 20:43 by Wayne Beaton

Today, we ran a termination/archive review for the Ajax Toolkit Framework (ATF) project. The current project committers just haven’t had time to dedicate to the project and so development has stalled. The docuware for the review is on the projects page (at least it is today).

Talkin’ to Users

Thursday, May 14, 2009 - 23:06 by Wayne Beaton

I get a lot of direct email with questions about Eclipse. Now that I’m being copied on mail sent to emo@, I’m getting a lot more.
